Adirondack Is Back - The Popular New (Old) Trend In Outdoor Furniture!
It's not a huge surprise that an all-American classic such as the Adirondack Chair is making a great come back in only the last few years. This retro fad is quickly spreading since people all over America are choosing to spend a great deal more time relaxing in their carefully devised outside living area. I myself remember as a 6 year old, sliding all the way back into one of these wonderful old chairs, with my legs swinging just over the edge, while my grandpa and I peeled the apples we picked and talked about the warm, homeade apple pie smothered with vanilla ice cream that we knew granny would have just for us after we ate dinner. With lemonade on the wide arm rest, the breeze was laid back and warm. Stories from Grandpa made time fly. It is really no big mystery why we love to unwind and relax outdoors, whether that is out on the patio, in your garden area, on the deck, or on the porch. There isn't a better way to relax than to sit down in a comfy, high backed, deep seated Adirondack chair and just let your cares go.
Exactly where did this little bit of Americana come from? Well, the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, of course. This design was prevalent among the many mountain hide aways and resorts that were so fashionable back in those days. By the time 1940 came around they were just about everywhere. The furniture style began moving south and headed west quickly. As the Adirondack furniture style got more popular, and made its way around the country, regional influences began showing up. The design was used in various outdoor furniture styles which include; benches, gliders, rocking chairs, porch swings, and thanks to our French Canadian neighbors, a piece they call the "tete a tete" which means literally; "head to head". This charming design incorporates two chairs and a table in between them built as a single piece. What a fantastic way to spend a cozy Saturday afternoon with someone who loves you!
You will be shocked and pleased to find a large collection of Adirondack style furniture on the market today. The original furniture style has not only stood the test of time, but the Adirondack craze has exploded with a delightful selection of colors, material, finishes, and styles. Traditional Adirondack furniture is constructed with wood that's known to resist corrosion and bugs such as oak, cypress, cherry, or red or white cedar. The wood that is chosen is going to vary depending on the part of the country as do specific furniture styles. A popular new addition to traditional Adirondack style is patio or deck furnishings constructed using polymer "lumber" that is made out of plastic recycled packaging, milk cartons, and other things. This is not only an environmentally sound way to buy furniture, but you will also have some advantages with durability, longevity, easy care, and your colors won't fade because the pigment is mixed through the plastic with UV inhibitors for protection.
